Want to START working out at home, mama?!
Check out these 5 workout essentials!
As a mom myself, I know it’s hard to find the time to work out. Okay, okay, that’s a massive understatement… I know it’s freaking tough. Some days it may even feel straight up impossible to muster up the energy. But can I be 100% honest with you? I’ve never regretted a workout I’ve finished.
Throughout my 30-something years, my fitness “history” has consisted of working out at the gym and distance running (for about a month 😜), with a Les Mills class or two thrown in the mix.
When I got pregnant with my son, I was teaching 3rd grade full-time, straight up exhausted and had some serious “night sickness” (morning sickness at night, anyone? 🤷♀️)… Needless to say, my workout routine died a quick and painless death 😂. Instead, it was replaced with re-runs of The Office and a 7 p.m. bedtime. Now, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that— at that time in my life, I 100% needed to be doing that. However, it got me into a bad routine that felt nearly impossible to break out of after my son was born.
At my 6-week postpartum checkup, I was given the go-ahead to resume my normal activities. I had every intention of making fitness a priority again, but breastfeeding was a nightmare, so I decided to exclusively pump. Y’all— that in itself is basically a full-time job. Add a brand new baby to the mix, and, as a first time mama, I was at max capacity.
I granted myself some grace and said I’d get back to it the moment I no longer had nightly wake-ups to pump. Fast-forward 6 months, and I was pumping so much that just wearing a sports bra was uncomfortable, so I told myself I’d get back to it the moment I was officially done when my son turned one. Well, fast-forward another 6 months, and we were dealing with some serious sleep regression. Again, I told myself I’d get back to it the moment my son was sleeping through the night again… You see where I’m going with this? 😏
Mama, it’s so important to grant yourself grace, but when doing so, you’ve got to be completely and wholeheartedly honest with yourself, as well. You are stronger, tougher and so much more capable than you give yourself credit for, I promise you that. The postpartum period for me was hard. I suffered from almost-debilitating postpartum anxiety. I had zero energy. I was running on empty, 24/7. And because of those things, my patience was practically nonexistent.
If I had known then what I know now, I would have started working out the minute I was given the okay to. It sounds counter-intuitive, but working out gave me the energy I thought was reserved only for pre-baby life. It helped to alleviate my anxiety in so many ways. It allowed me to be the best version of myself, to show up for my baby in the most important ways.
You want to know what the hardest part was though? It was actually not the workouts… don’t get me wrong, pushing my body to its limits was uncomfortable, it was painful, in fact, it was downright grueling at times. But no, it wasn’t that. It was getting started. That initial jump, the mental battle against self-doubt and apathy. The full-out war between good intentions and my comfort zone.
Tell me if any of these sound familiar.
I don’t even know where to start.
I don’t have time today.
I don’t have the equipment I need.
I know I should, but I just don’t want to.
Mama, I have been there, and let me tell you something… if I would have waited until I wanted to start working out, I never would have started. Once I reluctantly got past the fact that I was actually going to, I ran into yet another roadblock. I had no freaking clue where to begin. For one, my life looked completely different from the last time fitness was a part of my daily routine… like newly-married-no-kids-different. I was too intimidated to go back to the gym, that was for sure, but even my goals were different.
Keeping it 100% real… before kids, I worked out strictly for superficial reasons. After kids? I desperately wanted to feel like myself again. I wanted to have energy. I wanted to be healthy. Of course, I wanted to look fit— but it no longer held the importance it once did. My priorities had shifted drastically—in the best way possible.
Instead of focusing on how I looked (i.e. my squishy belly, dimpled legs, and “soft” physique), I decided to focus on how I felt. This was key, because you know what? My results were almost immediate. Within a week, I felt better. I felt different— I had more energy, I had a clearer head. I felt my confidence begin to return. I remembered that I could do hard things. These are the results that sustained me, that kept me on this path.
For me, these “mental results” transformed working out from a reluctance to a requirement. Yes, a smaller pants size, some ab definition, or a lower number on the scale can feel good— but it’s got nothing on feeling your absolute best.
Mama, I promise you— the physical results will come, they always do when you trust in the process. But by focusing on how fitness makes you feel instead of how it makes you look— you’ll collect your confidence and find daily successes in the meantime.
So whether you used to be an avid gym-goer or you’ve never worked out a day in your life, you’ve decided you’re ready to START (whether you actually want to or not 😉).— Yay you!!! 🎉. Now let’s take the first step together and check out these 5 favorites for working out at home!
5 MUST-HAVE EXERCISE ITEMS
1. Waist Trimmer by Sweet Sweat
Okay, stay with me on this one, and don’t let the name fool you! This is not one of those Kardashian-esque-shrink-your-waist-in-2-weeks products. The Sweet Sweat waist trimmer is considered a thermogenic waist band, i.e. it basically increases circulation and heats up your midsection, potentially boosting your fat-burning capabilities. However, that’s not why it made the list. This product has been an absolute godsend to this mama for a couple reasons.
First off, it provides instant abdominal compression! After having two babies, I’m still dealing with diatasis recti (a super common condition, basically meaning separation of the abdominal wall). The added compression gives me much-needed core support. It even helps with lower back support, too! I don’t know about you, but lifting a 40 lb toddler and a 20 lb baby has this mama’s back aching by the end of most days. Add weight-lifting to the mix and it would usually be game over for me! But enter this waist trimmer, and I get the support I need to have a more comfortable workout.
Sizes range from S-XXL, and fits waists up to 60”. Although it stretches and contours for a custom fit, it will not slip or move during your workout. It actually flexes to adjust to your shape and size. Just stretch it around your midsection, secure the Velcro, and you're good to go! I’m not kidding when I say I never do a workout without it!
2. 90 Degree Leggings by Reflex
So I’ve shared these leggings on my Instagram stories several times, but I can’t stop, won’t stop. #sorrynotsorry 😉
These are hands-down my favorite leggings ever. Seriously, they have all the qualities a mama could dream of in a legging! Let me break it down for you. Four little words: high-waist tummy control power. I don’t care if you have a six pack or some pounds you want to lose. If you’re a mama, you know that high-waisted anything is the absolute best (anyone else super happy that “mom jeans” are on-trend right now?!) . Not only that, but these have “tummy control power”, i.e. these babies suck you in (in the best way possible) with their wide, high-rise waistband. They’re basically shapewear meets athletic-wear… giving you the best of both worlds!
They’re made of Reflex’s signature ReBound Basic material, making them moisture-wicking and combining just the right amount stretch, compression and support. Added bonus, they’re squat proof (a.k.a not see-through) and have interlock seams to minimize rubbing and chafing.
These are without a doubt my go-to workout pants… and my do-life-in pants as well. 😜 Available in sizes XS- XXL!
3. Workout Tanks by Motto + Fleur
For a long time, I went back and forth about adding a “workout line” to Motto + Fleur. I had dreamed up all these designs, which sat idly waiting in a note-taking app on my phone. Part of me was convinced that workout tanks had absolutely nothing to do with what this brand is all about— mom life.
But you know what I realized? Working out is a part of my daily routine, and because of that, I’ve been able to gift my kiddos the very best version of myself. And isn’t that what mom life is all about? I’m talking patience and energy, y’all… the stuff I thought was lost forever when I became a mom!
Total transparency here… when I started this business, I made a promise I would never, ever sell or promote something I wouldn’t actively buy myself… and you guys, I love these tanks so freaking much. For one, they’re made of Polyester Interlock. Very similar to dri-fit material, it’s a super light-weight fabric that offers moisture-wicking and UV protection, making them ideal for an outdoor run 🏃♀️ or an indoor yoga sesh! 🧘
These statement tanks are designed to provide you with some serious fitspo, a.k.a. fitness inspiration. Did you know “inspirational quotes” is one of the most searched terms on Pinterest? There’s a reason why we all love a healthy dose of motivation! Inspirational quotes have the power to act as tiny-but-mighty motivators. They can resonate within our souls, reminding us of our potential and kindling a fire with a single spark of encouragement.
There’s something about looking in the mirror, sweat dripping down your face, on the verge of surrendering to your self-doubt… and seeing the most inspiring quote right smack dab in the middle of your shirt. When you’re wearing it, it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, reminding you of why you started this journey and giving you the encouragement to just. keep. going.
Whether you’re in the market for a new workout tank or not, check them out here— Find one that speaks to you, print it out, write it down, memorize it… do whatever you need to do… and when your workout gets tough (and it will), put that sh** on mental repeat! 🙌

(If you do, more power to you! …Also, please email me all your secrets immediately. 📩) When your motivation is running on E, you can throw your self in autopilot and be guided through a proper workout.
Let me introduce you to a mama who isn’t afraid to talk about her failures, who knows the struggles of dieting, who knows first-hand how hard it is to workout when you have a mobile child on your hands 😅… my friend, health + wellness coach, and possibly the kindest, realest, most inspirational mama you’ll ever meet… Brittany Patterson.
Brittany has been a Beachbody Coach for the last 4 years. For those of you who don’t know, Beachbody is basically a virtual fitness program. I’ve actually been doing Beachbody myself for over a year, and let me tell you… it’s 👏 a 👏 game-changer, y’all! 🙌 It’s what got me back into working out, it’s what kept me with working out, and it even got me enjoying my workouts!

5. Resistance Loop Bands by Letsfit
Since Brittany is an at-home fitness buff herself, I decided to ask her what her must-haves are— resistance bands made the top of the list, and I couldn’t agree more! I have my own set and use them frequently, both within the Beachbody program and outside of it!
These resistance loop bands by Letsfit are made from 100% natural, nontoxic, odor-free latex. I love a product that can multitask, and these really can do #allthethings!
